Aegina

For something a little bit different during your stay in Athens why not visit Aegina which is just a short 60 minute boat ride away. In just an hour you are transported away from the city to tranquil island life. There are plenty of cafes and places to eat and there are some lovely beaches too, it makes for the perfect day trip which is exactly what we did.

You leave from the port of Piraeus which is easily reached by train from central Athens. Lots more up to date info can be found here. You'll notice the port may have a few large cruise ships in dock too.

Whilst at sea, its always best to sit out on deck where you can feel the sea breeze and enjoy the views. If like me, boats make you feel a touch queasy I always find the deck to be my haven!

After about an hour you will be greeted by boats of all sizes, and you will be probably be surprised by  the size of the island, I was !

Once on the island start your explorations, it didn't take us long to find a beach completely empty which we could claim as our own for the day, just lovely! Now this was October, so it is the quieter season but the weather was still marvellous and many of the group opted for a swim!

After a day of beach frolicking it was time to head back to the mainland. It was hard to leave so it is worth looking at options to stay the night if you have time. Upon departure we were treated to one bloomin spectacular sunset.
