The Great Barrier Reef

A highlight of Australia and on most peoples bucket list, the Great Barrier Reef is a real wonder.

I took a day boat trip from Cairns to explore the reef, with Compass Cruises. I choose these guys as reviews were good and they were the cheapest option. Given budget was important this trip was certainly good value for money. You could snorkel at a couple of points on the reef and enjoy a whole day cruise for under a 100 aussie dollars- not bad at all. Refreshments were also included however wet suit hire and the option to scuba dive was extra (fair enough).

I got a bit lucky and managed to wangle my wet suit for free! Was worth it though as the water was certainly refreshing !!! The reef was truly amazing with so many different kinds of coral and fish to see. Some people on my boat did see turtles sadly for me I didn't. A nice touch by the crew was to talk you through what species of fish and other sea creatures you may get a chance to see.

Photos were taken by staff on the boat but I had a waterproof camera so took my own ! Quality isn't amazing but here are some of the stunning fish I got to see and swim with.

The Great Barrier Reef really is a must visit- there are tonnes of boat trips on offer so have a look around and find the one that suits you. For me I have no issue in recommending Compass Cruises if you are backpacking on a budget! Staff were uber friendly, food tasty and above all the snorkelling was fantastic.
